Oh Nam Joo is played by Kim Young Dae, who is currently involved in the popular Penthouse drama, while his best friend Lee Do Hwa is played by Jung Gun Joo. There’s also an interesting side story between Yeo Joo Da and two boys from the A3 (the equivalent of Boys Over Flowers’ F4 in Secrets). Because Baek Gyung is written as Eun Dan Oh’s love interest in Secrets, there’s something of a love triangle between Eun Dan Oh, Baek Gyung, and Haru, but it’s not as terrible as grating as most and I was never bothered by it. While he initially seems like your typical bad boy character, he grows more complex as the story progresses and we get to see what he’s like off-screen (in the shadows) vs on-screen and it’s so entertaining to see these conflicting sides of him. Many will also note Lee Jae Wook, a rising star in the Korean entertainment industry who plays Baek Gyung (the second male lead) in Extraordinary You. While this is something that Ro Woon and his character are criticized for, I’m not used to seeing male characters whose sole purpose revolve around their significant other so I welcomed it with open arms. Haru’s character revolves solely around Eun Dan Oh and thus doesn’t expand much beyond that. I believe it’s Ro Woon’s first main role and he does a nice job, although he admittedly doesn’t have a lot to work with. Ro Woon of SF9 plays Haru, an extra that Eun Dan Oh becomes involved with when she realizes that he can help her change her fate.
Extraordinary you and true beauty series#
Although there are a handful of main characters in this drama, Eun Dan Oh really shines and Kim Hye Yoon hard carries the series on her back to make it a wonderful drama that many will enjoy. Even though she’s in a pitiful condition, she’s a character you root for because she spends little time sniveling about her role in the story and takes action quickly to determine her own fate. Her role in Eun Dan Oh is nearly 180 degree turn from her previous role, and she does a wonderful job. Just a year prior to Extraordinary You, she was playing an arrogant and spoiled high-schooler in Sky Castle. Kim Hye Yoon is a well-respected actress in the Korean entertainment industry for good reason. It’s a lot like any other old-school shoujo you might run into, but the twist of following the background characters trying to change the plot really spices things up. Secrets is about a poor girl Yeo Joo Da, who recently transfers to Dan Oh’s school and captures the attention of cold-hearted Oh Nam Joo.

The “main storyline” of the webtoon Eun Dan Oh lives in, Secrets, isn’t that interesting, a fact that Dan Oh comments on. The setting is vibrant and beautiful, reminiscent of the more fantasy-like and over-the-top romantic elements seen in older k-dramas. I watched the drama a few months after it aired and fell in love with it immediately. I was excited to hear that it was being adapted because the premise seemed interesting and decided to check out the webtoon first before the adaptation came out, but only a few chapters were translated. I actually found out about this drama when I was first looking at webtoons that were adapted into a drama.
